Walnut tree

It’s not often I hear of a walnut being felled in my area, so was surprised when I received a call from the tree surgeon. This particular example had the beginnings of heart rot and was dangerously overhanging a drive.

Although not a huge tree, the timber had some beautiful markings and was relatively free from cracks. Luckily, my job of cutting it up had been made easier, as it was laid out in sections on the drive – no pushing a wheelbarrow across a muddy field, which is usually the case!

The classic dark colour of walnut comes from the heartwood – the sapwood is actually very pale…

I always like to leave things clean and tidy after my chain sawing. The stump can be seen in the background, which I guess could have been cut down further – however, there were some big stones in the way and my back was getting tired!...
