A blog about woodturning
Fallen ash tree
I've just cut up this large ash tree, which has been lying in a local field since the summer. Although the base is rotten, there's some beautiful wood further up the trunk.
Amazing burr sycamore bowl
This is one of the most difficult designs I've attempted so far and a truly remarkable piece. At nearly 23 inches across, it's certainly rather large!
Spalted beech tea light holder
Back in March, I rough turned a batch of tea light holder blanks and they're now dry enough to complete. With so many patterns on display, I can't wait to see them all in a line!
Stunning walnut bowl
I've just completed this amazing bowl, which has been sourced from local timber. Turned from an extra large blank, it measures over 21" across.
Incredible natural edge bowls
Over the past two weeks, I have been working on a selection of my finest natural edge bowl blanks. Now dry enough to complete, they have transformed into some impressive designs.
Gorgeous elm burrs
I removed these beautiful burrs from an elm trunk a few months ago and have just managed to rough them out for drying - a job I've been looking forward to for quite some time!
Wood Turning Projects to Bring Your Living Room to Life
Your living room is one of the most important areas of your home, serving both as a place to welcome and entertain guests, as well as an active area where a lot of your home life is spent.
Magnus's two day woodturning course.
This is my first experience of wood turning tuition and something, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. Magnus has just spent two days in my workshop making a variety of designs.
Logosol drying kiln
I've been planning to build my own drying kiln for quite some time, so I can process smaller batches of wood. With so many ideas and theories available, I eventually chose a kit.
My latest natural edge designs
Here's a selection of my latest natural edge bowls, soon to be featured on my site. I've been working with a variety of woods this month, although burr elm and yew will always be my favourites!
The huge yew tree
This large yew tree had to be felled, due to it pushing against a wall beside a churchyard. Luckily I've managed to acquire the complete tree, including the larger branches too.
A couple of my latest commissions
At the moment, the majority of my time is being spent preparing and finishing natural edge bowls. These are becoming ever more popular, especially the larger designs. Here's some which I've made just recently.
Huge burr elm bowl blank
Over the past few months I've been mainly sorting through elm, cutting it down to size and rough turning the useable sections. Although I've discovered some really nice pieces of burr amongst my stack of timber, this one is certainly special
Exquisite knives handmade in the USA by Wallace Hammond
I've recently sent some burr elm to US craftsman Wallace Hammond, who produces some of the finest knives I have seen.
Large natural edge burr elm bowl
I've been very busy roughing out bowl blanks at the moment, so they'll hopefully be ready in time for Christmas. However, I have been making some new designs too.
Cutting up the burr sycamore tree
I featured this amazing tree in my blog last December, so here's some photo's of it being cut up. Ever since it arrived, I've been dying to have a look inside!...
Huge natural edge yew bowl
I've just introduced a new supersize bowl, as part of my range of natural edge designs. At two feet in diameter, this is officially the largest yew bowl I've ever turned and is made from a single piece of wood.
Huge burr sycamore tree
First of all, I'd like to wish you all a belated Merry Christmas! - I've been incredibly busy over the past few weeks and had little chance of updating my blog. However, I was processing some more of the elm this morning and took some photo's of this beauty.
Burr elm tea light holders
These must be the smallest elm burrs I've had to date, though beautiful none the less! As you may have guessed, these are the first pieces made from my stack of elm and they're packed with rustic features
Spalted beech salt and pepper mills
It's certainly getting rather busy now, with December almost here and I've plenty of new designs in the making. Just finished, are these two sets of spalted beech salt and pepper mills, featuring some fantastic natural markings.
